How to Block TikTok on Android

Summary

This guide shows how to block TikTok on an Android device using built-in parental controls and Google Family Link. This prevents access to the app and limits the ability to reinstall it.

What this blocks

  • TikTok app
  • Reinstalling TikTok from Google Play
  • Access through links (in most cases)

What you need

  • An Android phone or tablet
  • A Google account for the parent
  • Google Family Link installed on the parent’s device

Step 1 — Set up Google Family Link

  1. Install Google Family Link on your phone
  2. Open the app and sign in with your Google account
  3. Add your child’s Google account
  4. Follow the steps to link your child’s device

This allows you to control app access remotely.

Step 2 — Block the TikTok app

  1. Open Google Family Link
  2. Select your child’s account
  3. Tap Controls → App limits
  4. Find TikTok
  5. Tap it and choose:
    👉 Block

If TikTok is not installed:

  • Go to Controls → Content restrictions → Google Play
  • Set app approval so new apps require your permission

Step 3 — Prevent reinstalling TikTok

  1. In Family Link:
    • Go to Controls → Content restrictions → Google Play
  2. Set:
👉 Require approval for all downloads

Now your child cannot reinstall TikTok without permission.

Step 4 — Reduce browser access (optional)

TikTok can sometimes be accessed through a browser.

To reduce this:

  1. In Family Link:
    • Go to Controls → Content restrictions → Google Chrome
  2. Enable:
👉 Try to block explicit sites

Note: This is not perfect, but helps reduce access.

Step 5 — Check for alternative access

Some apps or browsers may still open TikTok links.

To improve blocking:

  • Remove additional browsers (e.g. Firefox, Opera)
  • Only allow Chrome with restrictions
  • Regularly review installed apps

Optional — Set time limits instead

If you don’t want to fully block TikTok:

  1. In Family Link → App limits
  2. Set a daily time limit (e.g. 20–30 minutes)

Note: Time limits are easier to bypass than full blocking.

Common issues

TikTok still opens via browser

  • Android does not fully block specific websites by default
  • Stronger blocking may require DNS or router-level filtering

Child installs apps from outside Play Store

  • Disable unknown app installs in device settings
  • Check: Settings → Security → Install unknown apps

Final note

TikTok is designed for continuous scrolling and can easily take up large amounts of time. Blocking it often leads to an immediate reduction in screen use and fewer conflicts around device limits.

You can always allow access later, but starting with a clear restriction is usually the most effective approach.
